Approximately 900 acres in Warwick County, north of Newport News, Va., were developed into a park in 1930, as part of the terms of the charter of the Mariners Museum. A granite dam was constructed at the mouth of Waters Creek, creating a body of water to be named Lake Maury. From the description of Photographs of the Mariners Museum, 1930-1932.
